Together with actor and writer Ramsey Nasr, Ivo van Hove develops the character of this future literature Nobel Prize laureate in the grip of an artistic crisis and a case of writer’s block. At home in Munich, surrounded by his wife and the city’s bourgeoisie, Mann puts pen to paper and gives us Gustav von Aschenbach and his forbidden love for an underage boy.

New scores especially composed by Nico Muhly create musical transitions between Richard Strauss, Monteverdi, Webern or Schoenberg’ scores, ensuing a whirl of emotions while setting to music the torments of the characters and the pangs of creation.

Creation: Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, at the Théâtre Royal Carré (4th-13th April 2019) Co-production: Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, Barbican Center, Théâtre du Châtelet, Croatian National Theatre Zagreb
