Painting, circus, comedy, costumes, sets, lights… nothing escapes the overflowing talent of Dimitris Papaioannou.
After The Great Tamer, which received a standing ovation at the Festival d’Avignon in 2017, he established himself as a theatre prodigy with Since She, the first large-scale piece created by a guest choreographer with the Tanztheater Wuppertal company, presented by the Théâtre de la Ville in La Villette in July 2019.
As we speak, you’re coming out of your first month of research. What have you been working on and what axes are already taking shape?
I try to bring into play ideas around nightmares, erotic dreams and filiation, when the act of destroying ancient models is followed by the rediscovery of their values. We must then position ourselves in relation to our ancestors and reevaluate certain principles against which we had to rebel in our youth. Scenically, I am returning to a clear background, like a sheet of paper on which I draw. I am leaving behind the chiaroscuro of my previous creations.
Have you also renewed your circle of performers?
This is the first time that I have worked in a production of my own company with 8 performers from different cultures […]; you have already seen Christos Strinopolous, the main character in The Great Tamer, Michalis Theophanous my stage partner in Primal Matter and Breanna O’Mara from Tanztheater Wuppertal, the main character in Since She.
