All these young people, so diverse, and of whom, in truth, one must speak only in earnest, shared a single faith: Progress.
All were the direct descendants of the French Revolution. The most light-hearted among them grew solemn at the utterance of that date, ’89 […] They adhered, without the slightest intermediary shade, to incorruptible right and absolute duty.
Victor Hugo
When Cameron Mackintosh discovered, in 1982, the French concept album of Les Misérables, he at once discerned the potential of the work composed, four years earlier, by Alain Boublil for the libretto and Claude-Michel Schönberg for the music. Thereupon, the English producer met the authors in Paris and, in 1985, Les Misérables was staged at the Barbican Centre in London, in a version adapted to the English and American conventions of the musical.
Since then, the work has become one of the greatest successes of its kind, with more than 150,000 performances in nearly 500 cities worldwide, an audience of 130 million, and upwards of 190 international awards. It has been translated into 24 languages and, for forty years, has remained on the London stage, playing to full houses.
Long overlooked by the French public, the work was the subject of a new production during the 2024–2025 season, on the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet.
A true plea for social justice, it was borne by a company that invited audiences to rediscover the great airs of this musical, conceived as an opera: J’avais rêvé, À la volonté du peuple, Mon histoire, Le Grand Jour…
“To serve ever more faithfully Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, Alain Boublil revised, adapted, and reshaped the libretto, while Claude-Michel Schönberg reworked the score. And, to lend full splendour to this new French production of Les Misérables, Ladislas Chollat chose a staging of refined simplicity, without ornament, so as to grant pride of place to the story, the text, and its interpretation.
“The success was confirmed, both with the public and with the critics, as Les Misérables garnered further honours, including a Molière Award and no fewer than seven Trophées de la Comédie Musicale.
Enshrined within the heritage of the musical stage, and because ‘nothing is more beautiful than to be a prophet in one’s own land’, the work returns to the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet.
