How gently there still resound for me, in the distant reaches of memory, the enchanted strains of Mozart’s music! […] Mozart, immortal Mozart, how many, oh how many beneficent impressions of a life more radiant and more noble than this one dost thou bring to our souls!
Franz Schubert
The Orchestre Français des Jeunes (French Youth Orchestra) trains musicians aged 16 to 25 who will, in time, pursue careers as orchestral players in France and across the world. Since the summer of 2023, the orchestra has been in residence in the Bourgogne–Franche-Comté region, and during the autumn session (known as the “classical” session), the musicians live and work at the Saline Royale of Arc-et-Senans. For this concluding performance of the residency, the Orchestre Français des Jeunes gives one of its first concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet, under the direction of the violinist and conductor Guillaume Chilemme.
Two of the forty-one symphonies composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are on the programme: the first… and the last, the so-called “Jupiter”, perhaps the most famous of all and one that marks the apogee of his orchestral art.
But the voice is also part of this concert, with a selection of lieder by Franz Schubert, performed by Sandrine Piau. Orchestrated by twentieth-century composers, with the exception of Jacques Offenbach, these lieder set in perspective the succession of classical, romantic, and modern styles, for the duration of a single evening.
