Great Minds Think Alike
Olivier Py, Director of the Théâtre du Châtelet
Vibrant, musical, festive, eclectic, and bold. This is the spirit of the Châtelet! Few theatres embody both artistic excellence and true openness quite like it.
Before anything else, the Châtelet is a stunning place designed to welcome diverse art forms and audiences. Simply stepping inside feels like a celebration. Its acoustics are like a Stradivarius, its location and views are unmatched, and its welcoming spaces create the perfect setting for a festival of the senses. You can gaze at Notre-Dame from the Joséphine Lounge or take in the rooftops of Paris from the Nijinsky Lounge, then enter the most beautiful Italian-style theatre in the city, exquisitely restored. To spend a few hours or even a few nights at the Châtelet is not just to witness history, but to take part in it.
Here, audiences of all kinds come together, from rap fans to contemporary opera lovers, brought into harmony through musicals that speak to everyone. The Châtelet is more than a theatre: it’s a cultural statement, a temple of music that belongs to all.
Crossing the threshold of this house, people come with big dreams and high expectations from anonymous visitors to established artists. The Châtelet promises something no other theatre does: a moment of magic, an emotional duet with music, and a memory that lasts a lifetime.
That’s why this artistic and human adventure can no longer rely only on public funding. Though the City of Paris provides financial stability to keep the theatre running, our artistic ambition depends on the support of everyone willing to help. Producing these grand works on this magnificent stage is a true challenge. Beyond the joy of creating and reviving these musical cathedrals, we must also ensure they remain accessible to all with the lowest possible ticket prices. That balance is not always easy to achieve.
Yet, this past winter with Les Misérables for example, we have seen how the Châtelet can become a model for a theatre that is popular, ambitious, and in tune with today’s world, without ever losing sight of its core mission: to move, to inspire, to bring joy.
And so, we are endlessly grateful to all those who, in their own way, help us make the impossible possible each time the curtain rises.
